Midi and Sync for Korg KR-55 (uniPulse installation guide)

This guide describes how to install uniPulse into a Korg KR-55 and thus add midi trigger and sync. Some of the instruments react to velocity. The KR-55 can also be synced to the midi clock.

Trigger points

The following pictures show the location of the trigger points P1 – P10 on the bottom of the voice board. just solder the wires coming from the uniPulse to these points as shown.

Solder the GND and V+ wires to power the uniPulse board.

Midi sync

If you want to sync the KR-55 to midi, you need to install a switch to change between internal and midi clock. A double trough switch can be connected directly to pin 3 and 4 of IC3 as shown below. When the switch is closed the internal clock is overridden and the machine is synced to the midi clock. In this mode the START button of the KR-55 acts as a MUTE button.

Installing the unipulse board

We recommend using the panel mount version with internal midi socket. it can be mounted directly behind the back panel using the two screws provided. The board just fits between the transformer and the voice board. As you can see we mounted the clock-switch beside it so that midi clock is chosen when the switch points to the midi socket.

  1. Hello , finally got the new unipulse!
    Everything works thus far, however the white noise now does not trigger with the snare. For the life you of me, I can’t figure it out. I’ve tried every configuration and still nothing. The white noise returns when I remove the unipulse. Any help would be appreciated!
    Also the configuration file posted on this page is a lttle confusing, as it is a solid block of information without the trigger points labeled. Does the “x” stand for positive or negative? Is it possible to post a screen shot of the current KR-55 configuration application?

  2. Hi,

    we recently encountered this problem as well. There is an easy fix which has not made it into the installation manual yet. For the power supply of unipulse, just use the other other large capacitor. Will update the manual right away..

    This sounds great. But I have a question. Is it possible with this modification board to send MIDI sync data from it? I know the specs say you can now sync the drum machine from externally, but how about making the drum the master and syncing other gear to it?

  4. Hi, The Unipulse MK 2 is delivered with a separate learn button. Where can one find the instructions/manual for installing this? To which leg of the button do I connect to the Unipulse soldering points?

    the button has two legs and each leg has to be connected to one of the two ‘LEARN’ solder points.

  6. Are the trigger points 1-10 labeled? I guess I am curious about which voice belongs to which particular trigger point.
